The Salkantay Trek is ranked among the world's 25 best treks by National Geographic. Its highest point is Salkantay Pass at 4,638 m, with direct views of the Salkantay snow peak — the second highest in the Cusco region. The route descends from glaciers through coffee plantations in the cloud forest, ending at the mythical Machu Picchu.
Day 1: Cusco – Mollepata – Challacancha – Soraypampa
05:00 AM – Pickup from your hotel in Cusco and transfer to Mollepata.
07:30 AM – Breakfast in Mollepata.
08:00 AM – Morning vehicle ride uphill to Challacancha (approx. 1 hour 30 min).
09:30 AM – Begin the uphill trek from Challacancha to Soraypampa (7 km, around 4 hours).
01:30 PM – Lunch at Soraypampa.
03:00 PM – Hike from Soraypampa to Humantay Lagoon (4 km, about 2 hours).
05:00 PM – Return to the campsite.
05:30 PM – Tea time.
06:30 PM – Dinner.
Overnight – Camping at Soraypampa.
Day 2: Soraypampa – Salkantay Mountain – Huayracmachay – Chaullay
05:30 AM – Breakfast.
06:00 AM – Start the climb from Soraypampa toward Huayracmachay (12 km, 4 to 5 hours).
12:00 PM – Lunch at Huayracmachay.
01:00 PM – Begin the descent from Huayracmachay to Chaullay (9 km, roughly 3 hours).
05:00 PM – Arrive at Chaullay campsite.
06:00 PM – Evening tea time.
07:00 PM – Dinner.
Overnight – Camping at Chaullay.
Day 3: Chaullay – La Playa
06:00 AM – Breakfast.
06:30 AM – Descent to Playa Sahuayaco (15 km, approximately 5 hours).
12:00 PM – Lunch.
06:00 PM – Tea time.
07:00 PM – Dinner.
Overnight – Campsite at La Playa.
Day 4: La Playa – Llactapata Mountain – Hydroelectric Plant – Aguas Calientes
06:00 AM – Breakfast.
06:30 AM – Uphill trek to the Llactapata ruins (about 4 hours).
10:30 AM – Guided tour of the Llactapata archaeological site.
11:00 AM – Descent from Llactapata to the Hydroelectric power station (around 4 hours).
03:00 PM – Lunch near the hydroelectric plant.
03:30 PM – Walk from the power station to Aguas Calientes (10 km, roughly 2 hours).
05:30 PM – Arrival in Aguas Calientes.
06:00 PM – Dinner in Aguas Calientes.
Overnight – Hotel accommodation in Aguas Calientes.
Day 5: Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Cusco
04:00 AM – Breakfast.
04:30 AM – Start the uphill walk from Aguas Calientes to the Machu Picchu citadel (approx. 1 hour 30 min).
07:00 AM – Guided tour of Machu Picchu.
09:00 AM – Free time to explore the citadel on your own.
02:00 PM – Bus ride down from Machu Picchu to Aguas Calientes (about 30 minutes).
04:22 PM – Train journey from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo (schedule subject to change).
06:10 PM – Arrival at Ollantaytambo Train Station.
06:20 PM – Transfer by vehicle from Ollantaytambo Station to Cusco (about 2 hours).
